Los mayas se caracterizaron por utilizar jeroglíficos y códigos gráficos que los distinguían de otras etnias En la actualidad las mujeres tseltales conservan la memoria de sus antepasados, desriben su entorno y expresan sus sentimientos a través de las imágenes del bordado. En ambas culturas, la imagen ha sido un medio importante para mostrar más que un solo dominio de técnicas y habilidades estéticas, pues las figuras y los colores, acomodados bajo meticulosos cálculos matemáticos, narran su vida cultural, social, religiosa, económica y política.
