Land use/cover change practices in the Brazilian Amazon, such as cattle ranching, logging, agriculture, mining, and urbanization are the major contributors to deforestation and have major impacts on ecosystems and environmental processes at local, regional and global scales. A simulation of future landscape in the Kayabi Indigenous Territory in the Brazilian Amazon was carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and the IDRISI’s Land Change Modeler. The model was able to successfully simulate deforestation expansion in the region and identify the main landscape attributes driving anthropogenic disturbance expansion in the studied area. Distance from roads and distance from existing disturbance were found as the key factors driving deforestation in the Kayabi area.

Solar Hybrid Dryer

This paper presents the results of an experimental pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) drying study in a new solar hybrid dryer. The dryer is a direct and integrated type, with a black mate pan which measures 1.675 x 0.61 x 0.055 m (1.02m2). It uses a copper helical tube that conducts hot water, at 80°C, generating extra heat for the drying process; the tube is located at the bottom of the black pan. A caliber 6, transparent vinyl film is used as a cover and the walls and base of the dryer are isolated by 0.0254 m thick fiberglass. It is inclined 23° south and uses pump to recirculate water. The variety of pineapple used was honey, 1/4 of grown age. Each slice was 0.005 m thick, resulting in a mass density of 2.83 kg/m2 in the drying trays area. To be able to have useful comparisons, drying tests were performed during winter and spring of 2013, using both the hybrid dryer and the traditional solar dryer. Results showed that when initial humidity between pineapples is quite similar (this being one of the most influential factors in changing efficiency, time and other important process variables), evaporation efficiencies are higher in the traditional process; such efficiencies ranging between 22.7% and 24.0%; while the efficiency of the hybrid dryer ranges between 9.3% and 14.0%. This is basically due to the increase of energy loss when using both sunlight and heated water. On the other hand, the time the process took to reach the humidity goal (24.0% humid base or 0.32 dry based) was much faster when using the hybrid dryer. This dryer ended the process in a range of 6.0 to 6.8 hours while the traditional solar process took between 8.0 and 8.8 hours. It is also important to note that the final process was basically homogeneous throughout the dryer, especially when the drying trays on the top end of the dryer were placed 0.03 m further away from the top, and produced a fine quality product with only slight discoloration of the pineapples’ side which faced the sun. homogeneous throughout the dryer, especially when the drying trays on the top end of the dryer were placed 0.03 m further away from the top, and produced a fine quality product with only slight discoloration of the pineapples’ side which faced the sun.

This study aims to develop a novel hybrid scheme of Artificial Neural Networks (ARN) coupled to a non-linear Kalman filter
for air quality forecasting in Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, in Mexico. ARN’s are widely used for air quality forecasting,
however these schemes need large amounts of data regarding the pollutants concentration levels and meteorological data in
order to manage reliable forecasting. To address this issue, we present a scheme consisting of Neural Network models
assisted by nonlinear Kalman filter that manage to considerably improve the forecasting performance, adding robustness in
case of lack of data, and reducing the need of retraining over time.

Closed Depression Detection
The geomorphological characteristics and hydrogeological functioning of a geologically heterogeneous evaporitic karst plateau in Southern Spain were studied. Land surfaceinformation (LiDAR data) was used to analyze the shape and distribution of closed depressions. An artificial tracer test and monitoring of the natural responses of the main spring have allowed to infer the karstic development of the studied system. Three dyes were injected in selected swallow holes to trace the main groundwater flowpaths and to estimate the dimension of the conduit network. Discharge, electrical conductivity and temperatura were monitored in the groundwater that drains the evaporitic plateau during an individual and intense recharge pulse. Tracing techniques were adapted to high salinity environments by using specific calibration standards (NaCl + dye). The hydrological connection detected between two of the swallow holes and the outlet, and the deduced orientation pattern for closed areas, would suggest that the karst evolution (internal and external) is related to fault orientation. The rapid tracer detection (16-20 h) and high estimated maximum flow velocities (125-192 m/h), together with the fast impulsional response of the controlled physicalchemical parameters in spring waters (~15-16 h) demonstrate the existence of quick flows under recharge conditions with well-defined system drainage, indicating a high degree of internal karstification (estimated master conduit diameter ~1.5 m). However, flooding of the depressions feeding swallow holes and analysis of the spring response times from natural and artificial tracers point to a restriction of the system´s drainage, most likely due to the constrained morphology of the karst conduits. This results in sustained recharge periods and delayed spring responses of some parameters, highlighting the relevant role of concentrated recharge in the hydrogeological behavior of the studied evaporitic karst.

AireAMG is a mobile app for air quality forecasting in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area in Mexico. This app uses real-time air quality measurements of five criteria pollutants, along with meteorological data, to forecast air pollution concentration. A novel scheme of Artificial Neural Networks (ARN) coupled to Kalman filters is used to generate air quality predictions for up to 24 hours for each of the monitoring stations locations. We used these predictions to generate ozone and particulate matter dispersion maps, by interpolating with the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) method. AireAMG updates these forecasts and dispersion maps every hour, and is available for Android and iOS systems.

A cluster-based artificial neural network model called CLASO (Classification-Assemblage-Association) has been proposed to predict the maximum of the 24-h moving average of PM10 concentration on the next day in the three largest metropolitan areas of Mexico. The model is a self-organised, real-time learning neural network, which builds its topology via a process of pattern classification by using an historical database. This process is based on a supervised clustering technique, assigning a class to each centroid of the hidden layer, employing the Euclidean distance as a hierarchical criterion. A set of ARIMA models was compared with CLASO model in the forecast performance of the 24-h average PM10 concentration on the next day. In general, CLASO model produced more accurate predictions of the maximum of the 24-h moving average of PM10 concentration than the ARIMA models, although the latter showed a minor tendency to underpredict the results. The CLASO model solely requires to be built a historical database of the air quality parameter, an initial radius of classification and the learning factor. CLASO has demonstrated acceptable predictions of 24-h average PM10 concentration by using exclusively regressive PM10 concentrations. The forecasting capabilities of the model were found to be satisfactory compared to the classical models, demonstrating its potential application to the other major pollutants used in the Mexican air quality index.
