Considerations in the Implementation of an IoT Irrigation System
    (ITESO, 2024-09) Ruz-Armas, Lizbeth; Pardiñas-Mir, Jorge A.
The use of electronics in every-day devices has considerably increased over the last few years, allowing the Internet of Things (IoT) to emerge. This results in devices with a wide range of features such as monitoring and controlling the environment of a house or a building. They are based on embedded systems that gather and process information. In this paper, we present the optimal considerations for the implementation of an IoT system in an irrigation application. The application includes Thread network protocol for low power consumption and commonly used standards, and the CoAP communication protocol for increased security and extended battery life. An overview of the types of architectures, protocols and technologies typically used in a IoT system are also described.

Implementation of an Embedded IoT Blockchain System to Increase the Security of a Healthcare Institution Network
    (ITESO, 2024-08) Mares-Mejía, Marco A.; Inda-Ceniceros, César E.; Domínguez-Pérez, Luis J.
Embedded blockchain emerges as an alternative to protect sensible data due to its decentralized network strategy. The objective of this paper is to propose a proof of concept to improve the security of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) using an IoT embedded blockchain technology. The implementation consists of a smart contract deployed to the Ethereum Testnet to store medical data, and an IoT embedded system interacting with the contract. By adding a blockchain abstraction layer, the embedded system CPU load is reduced. Low-cost and accessible hardware and software parts were utilized. Results demonstrated that blockchain provides more data security when storing patient medical data based on the IMSS network infrastructure. Blockchain can be a feasible and beneficial alternative to traditional cybersecurity networks and applications.

Design of an Automotive Embedded System for Stratospheric Environments
    (ITESO, 2024-08) Medrano-Acosta, Marco A.; Aristizabal-Aristizabal, Julian C.; Mancilla-Torres, Maximiliano; Ortiz, Noe G.; Zepeda-Lopez, Carlos A.; Rizo-Domínguez, Luis
The Experimental Module for the Iterative Design for Satellite Subsystems (EMIDSS) is a nanosatellite project to obtain meteorological data from the low Earth orbit. The aim of this fifth version (EMIDSS-V) is to optimize the code and architecture from the previous versions. The AUTOSAR-like architecture model from EMIDSS-IV was preserved, while the application components were redesigned based on the NXP S32K144W microcontroller. For the memory module, the driver was recoded, and a new reading/writing algorithm was added. Also, the sensor driver interfaces were rewritten to standardize data collection. Additionally, a battery module was incorporated to make EMIDSS-V energy-independent. Finally, a user interface module was added to facilitate the configuration and data retrieval from the module. This work will serve as the basis for EMIDSS-VI.

Comparison Between Silicon Labs and NXP Development Platforms for Matter
    (ITESO, 2024-08) Cardenas-Ortega, Miguel A.; Santana-Sánchez, Sergio N.
Matter is a new application and transport protocol that can be used over IP networks to solve the interoperability issues of the home automation industry. The objective of this research is to evaluate the development complexity of Matter for embedded systems developers. A market survey of the available semiconductors that support Matter was performed to select two Matter chips from Silicon Labs and NXP for a proof-of-concept test. The test simulated the development of two basic smart home products, a smart light bulb and a smart light switch, to compare the development platforms and processes of each chip. Findings revealed that Silicon Labs offers a more robust and complete development platform for Matter than NXP. In conclusion, the current state of Matter development platforms and tools offers enough support for developers to integrate Matter into an embedded device.
